| UCSD Computer Graphics Rendering Competition |
These images show several of the final projects for the Spring 2007 "CSE168 Rendering Algorithms" class with Henrik Wann Jensen as the instructor. The students in the class were asked to render a realistic object or scene of their own choosing, and the images were judged by an external panel of experts (the best student image would be rewarded with a trip to SIGGRAPH 2007). The winners and honorable mentions were selected based on the quality of their rendered images and the technical difficulty.
The judges were:

Iman Sadeghi's "A Butterfly, A Water Drop and a High Speed Camera"Iman modeled a realistic scene depicting a water drop with bamboo and a butterfly. He implemented a number of techniques including photon mapping, depth of field, bump mapping, and area lights. He won a Full Conference trip to SIGGRAPH 2007 for his effort. More...
First Prize | |
Toshiya Hachisuka's "Kitchen with Programmer's Art"Toshiya did not have a clear idea of what he wanted to render, so he chose a reference image and focused on adding as many features as possible to his renderer. His efforts paid off and he won first prize! More...
Honorable Mentions | |
Aaron Barany's "Shrine"For his final project, Aaron decided to render a scene of a shrine, cut in the ground to produce a cave. He added a number of techniques including participating medi and photon mapping. More...
Wan-Yen Lo's "Dawn of Ancient China"Wan-Yen applied the techniques she learned in the class in re-creating a street from the Tang Dynasty. She also included procedural bump mapping, photon mapping, and soft shadows. More... |
Joey Hammer's "Diner Scene"In creating the rendering of a 50's-style diner, Joey focused on adding procedural wear and tear to usually pristine computer generated images. More... |
Brad Byrd's motion capture movieBrad took a bit different approach to the rendering competition: Instead of focusing on making a single image, he decided to make a movie. More... |
Kristen Kho's rendering of Geisel LibraryKristen rendered a fixture of the UCSD campus: the Geisel Library. In doing so she included effects such as depth of field, bump mapping, and area lights. More... |
